candi pawon |
The name of Pawon Temple can not be known for certain its origin. J.G. epigraphy expert de Casparis interprets that Pawon is derived from the Java language awu which means 'ash', gets the prefix of the pa- and the suffix -an which denotes a place. In everyday Java the word pawon means 'kitchen', but de Casparis defines it as a 'furnace' or a place of ash. Locals also mention the Pawon Temple under the name Bajranalan. This word may be derived from the Sanskrit word vajra = meaning 'lightning' and anala which means 'fire'. Pawon Temple was restored in 1903.
