Gunungan (mountain) or Kayon (forest) represents the cosmos, the beginning and end of everything.
It's placed in the middle of the Wayang Kulit screen before the drama begins, separating the opposing and again character groups at the end of the show.
It is also used during play for strong scene changes and emotions involving fire, earth and water.
