Famous for its intricate wayang and intricate musical styles, this ancient story form originates from the island of Java in Indonesia. For ten centuries, wayang flourished in royal palaces in Java and Bali as well as in rural areas. Wayang has spread to other islands (Lombok, Madura, Sumatra and Kalimantan) where local style of performances and musical accompaniment have grown. While these carefully crafted puppets vary in size, shape and style, the two main types apply: three-dimensional wooden puppets (clod puppet or golèk) and flat leather shadow puppets projected in front of the screen light up from behind. Both types are characterized by costumes, facial features and body parts that are articulated. The master puppeteer (dalang) manipulates the rotating arm with a slender stick attached to the doll. Singers and musicians play intricate melodies on bronze instruments and gamelan drums. In the past, dalangs were regarded as cultivated literary experts who transmitted moral and aesthetic values ​​through their art. The words and actions of comic characters representing "ordinary people" have provided vehicles to criticize sensitive social and political issues, and it is believed that this particular role may have contributed to puppet survival for centuries. The Wayang story borrows characters from native myths, epics and Indian heroes from Persian stories. Treasury and appearance techniques are transmitted orally within the family of puppeteers, musicians, and doll makers. The puppet puppets are expected to memorize the vast treasury of stories and to read ancient narrative passages and poetic songs in an intelligent and creative way. Wayang Puppet Theater still enjoys great popularity. However, to compete successfully with modern entertainment forms such as video, television or karaoke, players tend to feature comic scenes at the expense of storylines and replace music accompaniment with pop songs, leading to the loss of some distinctive features.
